50s serving tray saves the day

We hosted a fun filled casserole party last night. Our friends ROCK! The one thing that was missing this weekend though was a retro find. I'm trying to save money right now because I'm having 5 new big energy efficient windows replaced in the house. However if I find something 5 bucks or less then its fair game. I swear I searched and searched and came up empty handed everywhere I went. I found a beautiful Pyrex carafe at Goodwill with gold sunbursts on it. Was pretty excited until I saw the big crack around the rim. Oh well... left it there. The last stop today was at an antique mall, where I found this old serving tray. I love that it has turquoise in it, and the price was right. DONE DEAL, all mine. You saved my Sunday, little old tray!

  1. hmmm...I could swear I've seen that pattern on a set of dishes somewhere before...I'll have to keep my eyes open. I love old trays.

  4. LOL - don't forget you're wanting to get those new windows for your house! Another set of those dishes will come around eventually.

So, what kind of windows are you getting? I personally recommend the Pella Impervia. I had all of the original windows in my house replaced with the fiberglass Impervia's a year and a half ago and haven't regretted it once. They are great looking and really help save energy (although they are a bit pricey - it took me forever to save up my pennies to pay for the 10 new windows I put in the Shack!).

  5. I understand the $5.00 rule at Thrift stores. But what if there are 50 five dollar things!lol
The tray also has lots of things that match. I have some little versions that I put out around Fall.Zootsuitmama

  6. these windows are PGT Windows. I went with them because they were one of the few people that would replace my existing big windows with another big window. other people said they would need to put two windows side by side to fill up the space. Priced a heck of a lot better than the big stores too!

  7. #1--I saw a carafe yesterday that is a perfect match to the tray. I nearly killed myself getting it down from the top shelf at the antique mall and then decided not to get it since a little bit of the gold was worn. STOOOOOPID me! #2--In my world, the $5 rule applies to an item, not the total spent. Therefore it's ok to get as many $5 (or less) items as you want, at least until you run out of money . . .

  8. yeah my $5 rule applies per item, or i'll end up buying 4 $15 dollar things. As soon as these windows get installed then its back to higher priced items.... in particular a coffee table! Who knows, i may be able to find one for < $5.

  9. I love the tray. I have a coffee carafe in that pattern and some dishes that I believe were made in Canada. Maybe I should start a weekly post on something and see what matches people come up with. We would probably have quite a collection. I had the five dollar rule but we are saving up to build a house so I need to stop all together. It has become such an addiction, how will I ever stop. Maybe go with $1 items for awhile.
